UFC fans witnessed a huge upset as underdog Forrest Griffin defeated Quinton “Rampage” Jackson to capture the UFC light heavyweight championship. As the match began, Forrest was performing quite well until Jackson caught him with a vicious uppercut that sent him down to the mat. Griffin however was able to make it to his feet and maintain until the end of the round.
Round 2 seemed to be a turning point as was clearly Griffin’s round as he appeared to seriously hurt Jackson’s left knee with stiff kicks. As Jackson stumbled, Griffin scored a takedown and kept Jackson on his back the remainder of the round. Griffin used a constant ground and pound offense that left Rampage on the defensive.
As the match continued, Jackson stayed on the defensive while looking to counter. Meanwhile, Griffin remained consistent applying constant pressure with a varying offense of strikes and kicks. As the match progressed, Rampage landed his share of heavy blows that kept Griffin cautious but undeterred. Rampage was never able to score another knockdown on Griffin, and ultimately found himself following Griffin around the ring as Forrest dictated the pace of the match. In the end, even without pure dominance, the judges unanimously scored the match 48-46, 48-49, & 48-49 all for Griffin.
On the undercard, Patrick Cote defeated Ricardo Almeida via split decision, Joe Stevenson defeated Gleison Tibau via submission, Josh Koscheck defeated Chris Lytle in a bloody brawl via unanimous decision, Tyson Griffin defeated Marcus Aurelio via unanimous decision, & Gabriel Gonzaga defeated Justin McCully via submission.

Saturday night’s Shobox main event between Ricardo Torres and Kendall Holt provided boxing with what has to be considered the round of the year thus far in 2008. The fight which was a rematch to their controversial 2007 brawl, ended much sooner than any of us could anticipate. With just the fight just beginning, both fighters came out swinging and Torres managed to catch Holt with a thudding right hand that sent the challenger down only seconds into the match. Kendall Holt beat the count, but only moments later was dropped again after a series of punches punctuated by a left hook from Torres.
Although Kendall Holt once again beat the count and seemed okay, it appeared that his chin would not hold up to the firepower of Ricardo Torres. Just as it looked like the fight would soon end, Kendall Holt timed and caught Torres with a right hand coming in. The shot would send Torres down in what seemed to be a seated, slumped over position on the ropes. For a split second, it looked as if Torres was regaining his bearings. However, upon further inspection, Torres appeared to be out cold and motionless. Referee Jay Nady began to count, but quickly called the bout to a halt at 1:01 in the first round.
With the win, Holt is now the new WBO Jr. welterweight champion with a record of 24-2 and 13 Ko’s. Torres, whose record falls to 32-2 and 28 Ko’s, thankfully appeared to be okay after several minutes of being tended to by medical personnel. Regarding his loss, Torres stated, “I had him…He was in my hands. I got careless. He got me.” Torres was later taken to the hospital for a thorough post fight examination.
The undercard and co-feature saw Lamont Peterson defeat Rogelio Castaneda via 9th round stoppage. Peterson dominated Castaneda and methodically broke him down throughout the fight. The end came as Peterson landed a crashing right hook on Castaneda that sent him down to the canvas. Castaneda beat the count but when on to take more punishing shots from Peterson that prompted his corner to throw in the towel. Castaneda record falls to 24-14-3 while Peterson’s record now stands at 25-0.

The music is a reflection of the fighter and his/her mind state when stepping in the ring. So for UFC 86 in Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay, I decided to predict the melees based on the music the fighters came out to! HEreeeeerrrrrRRRReeeee We go!

In his first interview since his recent retirement last month, Floyd Mayweather let loose to the Grands Rapid Press with an exclusive interview with David Mayo. The interview touched upon his decision being final regarding retirement, his achievments, and alleged racisim at HBO.
Regarding his retirement being dead serious, Mayweather stated “I achieved all I wanted to achieve…I’ve been telling you for the longest that I’m getting tired. There’s nothing more to be done.” In speaking about the expected remtatch that was to take place with De La Hoya on September 20th, Mayweather stated, “Every day, I was telling Leonard, ‘I don’t really want to fight. Leonard didn’t really say much, because Leonard loves boxing. That’s his passion, not sitting around on thephone, making deals all day. It’s pretty easy now to make deals, when you’ve got the name Floyd Mayweather. But in the beginning, it was real, real tough.”

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – The World Boxing Association ruled today at its Directory Meeting that WBA heavyweight champion Ruslan Chagaev will be considered “champion in recess” due to an injury and that he has until June 26, 2009 to fight for the title..
Negotiations have started between representatives of the WBA’s top two rated heavyweights, ex-WBA champion Nikolai Valuev and former two-time WBA title-holder John “The Quietman” Ruiz (43-7-1, 29 KOs), respectively, to fight for the WBA “regular” heavyweight championship belt. The Valuev-Ruiz will be obliged to fight Chagaev by June 26, 2009.
“We’re happy to get an opportunity to fight for the WBA title again,” Ruiz said from Argentina.
The Puerto Rican-American Ruiz, living in Las Vegas, is the first and only Latino heavyweight champion of the world. He has fought in 10 world championship fights, defeating three world heavyweight champions — Evander Holyfield, Hasim Rahman and Tony Tucker – in addition to beating top contenders such as Andrew Golota, Fres Oquendo, Kirk Johnson and Jameel McCline during his 15-year pro career.

(KNOCKOUT NATION – JUNE 30, 2008)
NEW YORK – Monte “Two Gunz” Barrett (34-6, 20 KO’s) was supposed to be just a step up fight for gigantic six-foot-eight heavyweight Tye “Big Sky” Fields (41-2, 37 KO’s) on Fields’ way to heavyweight success. The 37-year old Barrett had other ideas Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Fields’ hometown.
Barrett was coming into this fight confident; knowing he trained hard and knowing he had a great opportunity to knock off a giant heavyweight. Barrett did just that. The Bronx native walked into the ring, was introduced, and heard the bell ring to start round one. Fifty seven seconds later, Barrett was standing over Fields, victorious by savage first round knockout.
Barrett threw vicious combinations and according to Compubox, he landed all of the six power punches he threw. “I was a desperate fighter and desperate fighters do desperate things,” said Barrett. “This win will serve notice that Monte Barrett still has some gas left in his tank and will do anything to get to that top level of the division.”
