Derrick Hoey, trainer of super welterweight Clarence “Sonny Bono” Taylor was shot and killed on Sunday morning in Delaware. Aside from training Bono, Hoey was known as a community activist and mentor to the youth in his neighborhood. Below is a detailed piece touching on this tragic news and the life of Derrick Hoey. LOS ANGELES, CA – World Boxing Council Junior Featherweight Champion and “Pound for Pound” Candidate Israel “EL MAGNIFICO” Vazquez has been honored across the board by boxing writers as his epic third bout against Rafael Marquez has received numerous “2008 Fight of the Year” awards. The third bout which took place March 1, 2008 at the Home Depot Center in Carson , California was won by Vazquez punctuated by a brilliant final round which saw the champion score a knockdown in the waning moments of their unforgettable fight..
Said Vazquez, “The fight took place ten months ago and it’s truly an honor to have the boxing writers choose this fight as the best of the year. It was a special night when Rafael and I fought back in March; we were both at the top of our game.”

The Vazquez/Marquez battle also was a unanimous winner in the fans voting on the Showtime website (sho.com), with a stunning 89% vote for “2008 Fight of the Year” for bouts broadcast on Showtime.

Reports have spread that a proposed rematch between Winky Wright and Jermaine Taylor is now off the table. Apparently, the two sides had problems coming to an agreement at the negotiation table. Not it seems that a potentential deal has been struck for Winky Wright to face Paul Williams on HBO World Championship Boxing sometime in April. (more…)

Many press and media reports coming out of Puerto Rico and Mexico have indicated that Oscar De La Hoya may be interested in facing undefeated, Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. The fight would follow the storyline of Julio Jr. getting some in ring revenge for the two losses his father suffered at the hands of De La Hoya.
